A plan to build a 37 metre Bell Mobility flagpole telecommunications tower has been put on hold while Vaughan council looks into developing a comprehensive plan to deal with cell phone towers.
Bell Mobility’s plan to erect the tower at the southwest corner of Rutherford Road and Bathurst Street has sparked complaints from nearby residents and schools.
Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco voted against a staff recommendation to approve the tower.
“They should go back to the drawing board and find another site,” Ms Racco said.
Noting a meeting held in September brought out residents from both Richmond Hill and Vaughan who expressed concern about possible health effects and radiation dangers, Ms Racco said the location is not appropriate.
Councillors asked staff to draft a comprehensive plan to deal with cell phone towers and delayed approving Bell Mobility’s request.
The decision must be ratified at a council meeting next week.
