BEIJING, June 16, 2006 (UPI) -- Chinese telecom regulators have reportedly drawn up a list of standards for wireless-phone radiation.
The Xinhua news agency said Friday that China, the world's largest wireless-phone market, will adopt a limit of 2.0 watts per kilogram of body weight (watt/kg). That's the same as the European Union's standard and slightly higher than the United States 1.6 watt/kg standard.
Radiation from wireless phones has raised concerns about possible health effects to phone users; however, scientific evidence is still being debated.
He Guili, director of China Telecommunications Technical Laboratories, told Xinhua that most Chinese-made phones are below the 2.0 watt/kg threshold.
The government rejected an earlier proposal to limit radiation to 1 watt/kg; however, He said radiation levels that are too low will not support some phone functions.
