Letter: Opposes cell tower in Westford Thursday, November 2, 2006
To the editor: To Westford residents - Would you like to see cell phone tower in your backyard? Omnipoint, Inc., a subsidiary of T-Mobile, is proposing building a 100-foot wireless phone tower to be erected on Texas Road. Currently, the town's zoning bylaws prohibit cell phone towers in residential neighborhoods - however, Omnipoint is seeking variances on four different counts, to enable them to proceed. This issue affects the entire community, since it may set a precedent regarding locating cell phone towers in residential neighborhoods, everywhere across Westford.
I am opposed to permitting any cell phone towers in residential-zoned areas and am strongly against this one. There is a public hearing on this issue before the Zoning Board of Appeals, Nov. 15, at 7:15 p.m., at the Millenium School. There are already at least three existing cell phone towers which support this area - all in either industrial or commercial-zoned areas - not residential neighborhoods: Nashoba Hill ski area, Nixon Road at Route 110, and Route 27 near Butter Brook Golf course. Cell phone towers will affect our environment, property values, families' health, and quiet residential lifestyle. A 100-foot high tower will be visible for miles - and will be an eyesore in any residential neighborhood, to say nothing about the 40-by-40 foot fenced enclosure required, to house its cabinets and maintenance structures. Granting of variances to allow this will have future impact on residential neighborhoods throughout Westford. Would you buy a house or want to live so close to a huge tower emitting electromagnetic radiation 24 x 7? I wouldn't...for any price. Please attend the public hearing on this issue, Nov. 15, at 7:15 p.m., before the Zoning Board of Appeals, at the Millenium School - and voice your opinions that cell phone towers don't belong in residential neighborhoods.
