I am writing to express my concern about the fact that Omnipoint Communications has applied for a variance to have a 100-foot cell tower placed in a residential area.
I lived at 11 Texas Rd from 1985 to 2002, and then moved down the street where I currently preside at 2 Autumn Leaf Lane, a cul-de-sac off Texas Road. I have been a Westford resident for over 21 years. One of the reasons my husband and I picked Texas Road to live on was the fact that it was a quiet, dead end wooded street with conservation and Audubon lands to enjoy. It was a wonderful neighborhood to raise our two children. Had there been a large imposing cell tower emitting continual electromagnetic radiation I would never have considered purchasing a home here. My point is this: I am very concerned about property values and the salability of any home in this area should this tower become a reality. It is hard for me to imagine how Texas Road and its environs will retain its country character and appeal with a 100-foot tower looming in the backyard of a neighbor's home. I fear that a precedent will be set for towers to be placed anywhere throughout any residential neighborhood in Westford, and that will quickly take away from Westford's long standing ideals of retaining its country charm and appeal despite all the growth the town has experienced in the past years.
I fail to understand the reasoning behind why a tower would be placed in any residential area for the sake of better cell phone coverage. It would only make sense that towers be placed in commercially zoned areas, and we need to find a way make this happen.
