RF Safe, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about the potential health risks of radiofrequency (RF) radiation, has launched a voter awareness campaign titled “A Vote for Kamala Harris Is a Vote for Brain Cancer.” The campaign aims to inform the public about what RF Safe describes as critical issues regarding outdated RF radiation safety standards and the urgent need for regulatory reform.
According to John Coates, founder of RF Safe, the rapid expansion of wireless technology—including 5G networks and an increasing number of cell towers—has led to exponentially higher exposure to RF radiation. Coates asserts that prolonged exposure poses serious health risks, including brain tumors, cancer, and neurological disorders.
“The science is clear,” Coates stated. “Multiple studies have indicated that current RF radiation safety guidelines are insufficient to protect public health, especially given the technological advancements since these standards were set.”
Concerns Over Outdated FCC Guidelines and Court Orders
RF Safe highlights that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) continues to rely on safety guidelines established in 1996. The organization points out that these guidelines focus solely on the thermal effects of RF radiation and do not account for non-thermal biological effects, which recent studies suggest may have significant health implications.
“The FCC continues to use outdated standards despite being court-ordered to update them after the courts reviewed a substantial body of scientific evidence indicating potential health risks,” Coates said. “It’s imperative that these guidelines be updated to reflect modern science.”
In 2021, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the FCC had failed to provide a reasoned explanation for its determination that its guidelines adequately protect against harmful effects of exposure to RF radiation unrelated to cancer. RF Safe asserts that the Biden-Harris administration has not enforced this mandate, leaving the public without updated protections.
Scientific Studies Raising Alarms
The campaign references several key studies, including a decade-long, $30 million investigation by the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP). This study reported findings of increased cancer rates in lab animals exposed to RF radiation levels similar to those emitted by cell phones. Additionally, the Ramazzini Institute in Italy conducted research that corroborated the NTP’s findings, showing similar results at even lower exposure levels.
In 2024, a study analyzing tumors from the Ramazzini Institute’s research found morphological similarities and shared genetic mutations between tumors in rats and certain human cancers, further suggesting a potential link between RF radiation exposure and cancer in humans.
Criticism of the Current Administration
RF Safe criticizes the Biden-Harris administration for what it perceives as inaction on these concerns. The organization alleges that funding for the NTP’s research was diverted to military projects, effectively halting critical studies into the health effects of RF radiation.
“Redirecting funds away from essential cancer research sends a troubling message about the administration’s priorities regarding public health,” Coates remarked.
The organization contends that Vice President Kamala Harris has aligned herself with policies that allow the telecommunications industry to operate under outdated safety standards, potentially putting millions at risk.
Calls to Action Ahead of the Election
As the election approaches, RF Safe urges voters to consider candidates’ positions on RF radiation safety. The organization highlights the contrasting stances of other political figures who have advocated for updated safety standards and increased research funding.
RF Safe’s campaign calls for:
- Updating FCC Safety Guidelines: Revising standards to incorporate current scientific research on both thermal and non-thermal effects of RF radiation.
- Restarting NTP Research: Reinstating and expanding the National Toxicology Program’s studies on RF radiation to inform future safety regulations.
- Ensuring Regulatory Independence: Reducing corporate influence over the FCC to prioritize public health in regulatory decisions.
