A member of the expert committee at World Health Organization/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), 2011,  Dariusz Leszczynski spoke at an event organized by Syenergy Environics at the India International Centre (IIC).  The Topic: “Mobile tower and cell phone radiation – its threat and perception”.

The key expert speaker Leszczynski, said that radiation exposure from smartphones is much higher because of data traffic.

“Smartphone radiation exposures are much higher because of the data traffic. Even though one may not be using the phone all the time, there is continuous data flowing from Facebook and other apps such as weather, news update and so on that people have on their phones,”  Leszczynski said.

Leszczynski has played a very important roll in the world’s understanding of cell phone radiation health effects. He informed the audience that he was a part of the 31 scientists committee (IARC) constituted by the WHO and 26 scientists among them classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), because of links to phone radiation causing brain cancer with its long term use.

He made a point to tell people to not talk on a cellphone for more than a half an hour in day, he also discouraged them from keeping cell phones close to the body, even in a pocket and never near a pregnant woman’s belly.

Leszcznski added that it is very important that safety standards are revised and users should be informed of current scientific uncertainty and that much more research warranted in this field.

According to the expert, “current safety standards are insufficient”.

He isn’t alone on this assumption either, even the US Government Accountability Office pushed for the FCC to review RF exposure limits and SAR test requirements for cell phones.  See Reassessment of Federal Communications Commission Radio-frequency Exposure Limits and Policies” (Proceeding Number 13-84).

The FCC requires all cell phones sold in the USA must not exceed a maximum SAR of 1.6 watts per kilogram averaged over one gram of tissue.  Official FCC documents show 950 submissions — most calling for stronger safety regulation; Scientist and organizations have labeled SAR  as, “not being able to protect the public“,  from hazards now proven at non-thermal exposure levels.

The multitrillion dollar wireless industry is getting away with manipulating the scientific results of world class doctors, researchers and scientists!

Implications of WHO/IARC classification that are not spoken aloud

Following the IARC meeting, one would assume that the classification of cell phone radiation as a possible carcinogen would scientifically justify the need for more research and will lead to more research funding to help close the gaps in the knowledge.

But, nothing significant happened to the research effort. In fact, the industry considered the new classification as sort of a “clean bill of health” because cell phone radiation was not classified as a carcinogen, acting as if a possible carcinogen isn’t bad at all.

In summary, IARC classification:

The precautionary principle or precautionary approach states that if an action or policy has a suspected risk of causing harm to the public or to the environment, in the absence of scientific consensus that the action or policy is not harmful, the burden of proof that it is not harmful falls on those taking an action.

Outcome of the IARC classification.

The IARC classification indicates that current safety standards are insufficient to protect a cell phone users health. Results obtained in the Interphone study and Hardell studies were obtained from people using regular cell phones that meet current safety standards.  In spite of meeting current safety standards, long-term avid use of these cell phones led to increased risk of cancer from cell phone radiation exposure at non-thermal levels.

It logically means that the current safety standards are insufficient because the amount of radiation emitted from cell phones in compliance with safety standards still causes increased health risk of developing cancer.
