Effect of electromagnetic waves from mobile phone on immune system of male rats: possible protective role of vitamin D

This study assesses the effect of electromagnetic radiation (EMF) emitted from a mobile phone on the immune system of rats and the possible protective role of vitamin D. The study found that 30 days of exposure to EMF for 1 hour a day resulted in a significant decrease in immunoglobulin levels and total leukocyte, lymphocyte, eosinophil and basophil counts and an increase in neutrophil and monocyte counts. These changes were more pronounced in rats exposed to 2 hours a day of EMF. Vitamin D supplementation in EMF-exposed rats reversed these effects. The study concluded that exposure to mobile phone radiation negatively impacts the immune system of rats and vitamin D appears to have a protective effect.

Introduction

Mobile phones have become an integral part of our daily lives. However, the growing use of mobile phones has sparked public concerns about their potential impact on human health. Electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted from mobile phones are one of the factors that have raised questions about their safety. The present study aims to assess the effect of EMF emitted from mobile phones on the immune system in rats and explore the possible protective role of vitamin D.

Background

There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that EMF emitted from mobile phones may have adverse effects on human health. EMF exposure has been associated with a range of health problems, including headaches, dizziness, memory loss, and sleep disorders. Additionally, there is evidence to suggest that long-term exposure to EMF may also have a negative impact on the immune system.

Methods

In this study, rats were randomly divided into six groups: Group I (control group), Group II (received vitamin D orally), Group III (exposed to EMF for 1 hour per day), Group IV (exposed to EMF for 2 hours per day), Group V (exposed to EMF for 1 hour per day and received vitamin D orally), and Group VI (exposed to EMF for 2 hours per day and received vitamin D orally). The rats were exposed to EMF for 30 days, and their immune system was then analyzed.

Results

The results of the study showed that exposure to EMF for 1 hour per day resulted in a significant decrease in immunoglobulin levels (IgA, IgE, IgM, and IgG), total leukocyte, lymphocyte, eosinophil, and basophil counts, and a significant increase in neutrophil and monocyte counts. These changes were even more pronounced in the group exposed to EMF for 2 hours per day. Vitamin D supplementation in EMF-exposed rats reversed these results when compared with EMF-exposed groups. However, 7, 14, and 21 days of EMF exposure produced non-significant differences in these parameters among all experimental groups.

Conclusion

The results of this study suggest that exposure to mobile phone radiation compromises the immune system of rats. Vitamin D appears to have a protective effect, reversing the negative impact of EMF exposure on the immune system. This study highlights the importance of considering the potential impact of mobile phone radiation on human health and the need for further research in this area.
