Is Your Anti-Radiation Case Dangerous?

RF Safe Approved Brands: What to Look For in an EMF-Blocking Phone Case

With the increasing use of smartphones, the concern for the potential health effects of exposure to radiofrequency (RF) radiation has also risen. This has led to a booming market for EMF-blocking phone cases, each claiming to provide protection against this type of radiation. However, not all of these cases are created equal. So, how can you ensure that you’re getting a safe and effective EMF-blocking phone case?

The answer lies in choosing an RF Safe Approved Brand. But what does it take to be considered an RF Safe Approved Brand? Here are the two main factors to consider:

1) Truthful Claims and Testing Methodology

The first factor to look for in an RF Safe Approved Brand is that they adhere to ethical guidelines and do not mislead their customers with false testing claims. When making RF blocking claim from test results, a reputable brand should always test their anti-radiation phone cases with an actual smartphone, not just a signal generator testing raw material, before assembling it into their product. The results of the shielding capabilities should never present the raw shielding materials’ capabilities before being integrated into the final product.   There is NO significance in testing raw shielding material with a signal generator, as a simple piece of tin foil from your kitchen cabinet can shield 99% of 5G microwave radiation when used as a flat piece of raw foil tested with a signal generator. Misleading and false claims can give people a false sense of protection, which can be dangerous.

2)  Antenna Functionality (Rear Of Case)

The second factor to consider is that the EMF-blocking phone case should not interfere with the normal operation of the phone’s antenna. Brands like Safesleeve and DefenderShield sell a detachable cell phone case that should not be considered an anti-radiation accessory, as it interferes with the phone’s antenna and can potentially expose the user to even greater levels of microwave radiation. This warning was issued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and met the definition of a cell phone shield scam.  We have covered this in detail here.

It’s important to choose an RF Safe Approved Brand for your EMF-blocking phone case to ensure that you’re getting a safe and effective product. Look for brands that adhere to ethical guidelines, test their actual products, not raw materials, before being used in the product, and DO NOT interfere with the normal operation of the phone’s antenna. By doing so, you can protect yourself from the potential health effects of RF radiation while still enjoying the convenience of your smartphone using safety precautions that work.

3) No Metal Carrying Strap Loop  (Top Of Case)

The metal loop in many wallet-style phone cases can have an impact on the distribution of radiation the user is exposed to because it can interfere with the normal operation of the phone’s antenna. Antennas in cell phones emit and receive radiofrequency (RF) radiation, which is the type of radiation that concerns people when it comes to potential health effects. If a metal loop is placed near the phone’s antenna, it can cause a distortion in the normal propagation of the antenna’s signal. This can result in increased exposure to RF radiation for the user.

To ensure the normal operation of a smartphone’s antenna and minimize exposure to potential interference, RF Safe has always made the conscious decision not to incorporate a metal loop at the top of its phone cases. This eliminates the risk of magnetic field distortion caused by metal parts, which could result in a larger surface area of the head being exposed to microwave radiation. This is due to the same principles that apply when metal eyeglass frames alter radiation exposure, as demonstrated in SAR testing. The addition of metal near the antenna while a phone is transmitting close to the head can have negative effects, altering the pattern of radiation surrounding the head in a way that is not accounted for by the manufacturers because they do not do the tests necessary to assess the impact on a users radiation exposure.

Before we dive into the pros and cons of the many different EMF-blocking phone cases on the market today, let’s talk about what it takes to be considered an RF Safe Approved Brand for RF/EMF safety accessories.

First, a brand must meet moral guidelines and not mislead the customer with false testing claims. The anti-radiation cell phone case must be tested with a real smartphone, not a signal generator.    Shielding results for a phone case should NEVER present the raw shielding materials’ capabilities before being integrated into a product matrix.  There is no relevance to raw shielding material tested with a signal generator as a flat sheet of foil blocking 99% of RF radiation before it is put into a phone case.   Seriously, tin foil in your kitchen cabinet will shield 99% of 5G microwave radiation as a flat piece of foil.   It’s really sad to see so many people fall victim to misleading and false claims.  Such a false sense of protection can put these people in much great danger!

Second, the anti-radiation case must NOT interfere with the antenna’s normal operation. Brands like Safesleeve and DefenderShield sell a detachable cell phone case that should NOT be allowed on the market as an anti-radiation accessory because it interferes with the phone’s antenna, exposing the user to even greater levels of microwave radiation. This is a warning issued by the FTC, and meets the definition of a cell phone shield scam.

A neat fact proving a brand doesn’t have to stay on the dark side: Pong, now Alara Case under the name GagetGuard, has improved its marketing activities and is being honest about its claims. While their approach is different from traditional shielding, the founder of RF Safe can vouch for their validity. However, there is no guarantee that a lower SAR is safer. The founder believes that there is/will be overwhelming evidence that negative health effects can occur at detectable levels below brute force heating effects.
