Due to their wide-spread availability, cell phones have become a necessity, something most of us cannot do without. But recent studies have shown that the use of cell phones has been associated with many negative effects related to the nervous system, such as headaches, neurovegetative dystonia, irritability, sleep disorders, fatigue, and dizziness. The nervous system has been proven to be the most sensitive to the effects of the electromagnetic field of mobile phones.

In a study posted to the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine, a cross-sectional study was carried out at two distinguished universities in two countries—the University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine, in Serbia and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Rome, Italy. A total of 785 randomly selected university students (253 males and 532 females) were used in the study.

The findings of the study strongly indicate that the intensity and the modality of cell phone use could be a factor that can lead to mental health problems in university student populations. The general trend of increased use of cell phones, especially in university students and young adolescents dictates the need for more comprehensive research. However, even on the study’s level of investigation, it is more than evident that a certain degree of caution must be considered among high-frequency users.
