Deceptive EMF Safety Products Are Putting Consumers at Risk
From laptop radiation shields to detachable phone cases, misleading anti-radiation accessories are increasing exposure instead of reducing it. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has a duty to investigate these deceptive marketing claims—before more people unknowingly increase their RF radiation risk.
New research shows that short bursts of Wi-Fi exposure—like using a laptop on your lap—may cause more immediate damage than prolonged exposure. Yet, many so-called “radiation shields” encourage exactly that, putting consumers at risk, especially pregnant women and children.
Laptop Radiation Shields: A False Sense of Security
Many consumers buy laptop radiation shields assuming they are reducing their exposure. In reality, they may be making things worse by:
✅ Blocking radiation from the legs while increasing exposure to the torso and reproductive organs.
✅ Encouraging users to keep laptops in their laps, placing the Wi-Fi transmitter even closer.
✅ Misleading customers with lab tests of raw materials instead of real-world testing on active devices.
The Science: Short Bursts of Exposure Can Be More Harmful
A 2025 study (Jamaludin et al., Antioxidants) revealed that 4-hour exposures to 2.45 GHz Wi-Fi radiation caused higher oxidative stress and sperm/testicular damage than 8 or 24 hours. Researchers found that:
- Oxidative stress peaked at 4 hours, damaging sperm viability and motility.
- At 8+ hours, cell repair mechanisms started working, helping to mitigate damage.
This suggests that short, high-intensity bursts—like using a laptop on your lap—can be worse than long-term exposure.
The Risk to Pregnant Women & Children
Laptop radiation shields do nothing to protect a developing fetus—in fact, they encourage closer exposure to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals.
For parents, these shields give a false sense of safety while exposing young children to heightened levels of RF radiation.
The safest practice? Keep laptops OFF your lap. No shield can make it safe.
Detachable Anti-Radiation Phone Cases: The Other Major Threat
Beyond laptop shields, another huge scam in the anti-radiation market is detachable phone cases with metal plates or magnets.
✅ They block the phone’s antenna, forcing the phone to increase power output, which can increase RF radiation by 20-70%.
✅ They disrupt the intended shielding by scattering RF waves unpredictably.
✅ Consumers falsely believe they are protected, but real-world tests show higher exposure, not lower.
A KPIX 5 (CBS) investigation found that many “anti-radiation” cases claim to block 99% of radiation—but only in lab tests on raw materials, NOT actual usage scenarios.
What the FTC Needs to Do NOW
Just as the FTC shut down misleading EMF product marketing in 2003, they must take action again. We demand:

2️⃣ Mandatory Warning Labels for products that increase radiation exposure.
3️⃣ Stricter Testing Requirements for real-world radiation shielding claims.
