Why RFK Jr. Must Go Beyond France’s Cell Phone Ban: Protecting American Children from Wireless Radiation

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently proposed banning cell phones in American schools, following France’s example. While this initiative might initially appear proactive, it fundamentally misses the deeper and far more dangerous issue: the constant, unchecked exposure of our children to harmful radiation emitted from cell towers.

I speak not just as an advocate but as a father who has suffered the ultimate loss due to wireless radiation exposure. My firstborn daughter was tragically taken from us, a loss directly linked by research to wireless radiation. Now, my seven-year-old daughter, Melanie Coates, attends a school where her desk is a mere 465 feet from a powerful cell phone tower—far below the 1,500-foot safety standard recommended by independent scientists in the BioInitiative Report.

The Real Threat: Cell Towers, Not Cell Phones

Simply banning cell phones in schools, while politically easy, doesn’t address the pervasive, invisible threat from cell towers. This incomplete approach is akin to removing matches from children while ignoring the raging fire around them. The true danger arises from chronic, cumulative exposure to wireless radiation.

Confronting the Telecom Giants

Targeting children rather than the trillion-dollar telecom industry misplaces responsibility and avoids the core problem. The telecom giants, through unchecked power and influence, have systematically externalized the health costs onto American families, leading to real-world consequences like cancer, developmental disorders, and tragic losses.

The Constitutional Crisis: Section 704

Section 704 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 is the root of the regulatory crisis, stripping local governments of their rights to oppose cell tower placements based on health concerns. This unconstitutional provision violates our First Amendment right to petition and our Tenth Amendment rights to local governance. Not coincidentally, this law was enacted the same year the EPA was defunded, shifting regulatory authority to the FCC—an agency without medical expertise.

Fraudulent FCC Guidelines

The FCC’s thermal-only guidelines are fundamentally flawed and fraudulent. Established in ignorance or willful disregard of decades of non-thermal biological effects research—including the telecom industry’s own studies—they are incapable of addressing the unpredictable, nonlinear biological effects of RF radiation. Recent studies have clearly demonstrated harm even at lower doses and shorter durations, completely undermining the linear, heat-based assumptions currently in use.

Nonlinear Biological Effects and Recent Discoveries

Groundbreaking studies, such as the National Toxicology Program’s research and the Ramazzini Institute’s parallel studies, have demonstrated that RF radiation causes biological harm at non-thermal, real-world exposure levels. The recent “Four-Hour Worst Effect” discovery further underscores the complexity, revealing that shorter intermittent exposure periods could be significantly more harmful than continuous exposure, due to inadequate time for cellular repair and adaptive responses.

Ethical and Moral Imperatives

We bear a profound moral responsibility to protect our children, especially given their increased vulnerability due to thinner skulls, rapid cellular growth, and prolonged lifetime exposure. The prioritization of corporate profits over children’s health represents a breach of our social and ethical contract.

RFK Jr.’s Responsibility and Opportunity

As Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), RFK Jr. holds the power and responsibility to enforce Public Law 90-602, mandating continuous research and safety updates for radiation-emitting technologies. The recent shutdown of the National Toxicology Program’s research violates this law, and RFK Jr. must urgently reinstate this critical work.

Clear Steps Forward

To truly protect American children from wireless radiation, we must:

  • Repeal or significantly amend the unconstitutional Section 704.
  • Replace outdated, fraudulent FCC thermal guidelines with biologically accurate safety standards.
  • Implement safety limits based on real-world, intermittent exposure.
  • Promote safer technologies, including Li-Fi and fiber optics, to minimize radiation exposure.
  • Reinstate federally funded, independent research into non-thermal biological effects.

A Call to Immediate Action

Mr. Kennedy, incremental policy changes are insufficient. American children like my daughter Melanie urgently need transformative leadership. Take bold action now to address these systemic failures. Protect our children, uphold constitutional rights, and ensure a safer, healthier future for generations to come.

The scientific evidence is undeniable. The laws are clear. Now is the time for courageous leadership.
